Ondansetron HCI (Zofran)

CLASS:

  • Antiemetic

  • Serotonin Type 5-HT3 receptor antagonist

ACTION:

  • Serotonin Type 5-HT3 receptor sites in chemoreceptors of the medulla and peripherally on vagal nerve terminals

INDICATION:

  • prevent nausea and vomiting

CONTRAINDICATION:

  • Hypersensitivity

STANDARD PREP: 4mg / 2ml

DOSAGE/ROUTE: 4 mg IV (repeat if no effect in 5 minutes) for adults and children > 10 kg

Onset: Rapid. Peak: 15-30 min Duration: 4-8 hr

PEDIATRIC DOSE:

  • 0.1 mg / kg IV for children less than 10 kg

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Hypoxia

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Blurred vision

  • Headache

  • Abdominal Pain / Constipation / Diarrhea

  • Anxiety

  • Malaise

  • Bronchospasm

  • Urinary retention

PRECAUTION:

  • Use with caution in people with hepatic insufficiency
