IPRATROPRIUM BROMIDE (Atrovent)

CLASS:

  • Anticholinergic

  • Parasympatholytic

  • Bronchodilator

ACTION:

  • An anticholinergic that blocks the action of acetylcholine at the muscarinic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle causes bronchodilation

  • Dries respiratory tract secretions

INDICATIONS:

  • Severe Bronchospasm

CONTRAINDICATION:

  • Hypersensitivity to peanuts or soy protein

  • Should not be used as primary acute treatment of bronchospasm

STANDARD PREP:

  • 0.5 mg/2.5 ml (0.02%)

DOSAGE/ROUTE:

  • 0.5 mg via updraft for both adults and peds. (typically administered with a beta agonist)

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Palpitations / Tachycardia

  • Dizziness

  • Anxiety

  • Headache

  • Nervousness

  • N/V

  • Cough, Dry Mouth

  • Transient Increased Bronchospasm

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma, acute eye pain

  • Hypotension may occur rarely
