AMMONIA-AROMATIC SPIRITS

CLASS:

• respiratory stimulant

ACTIONS:

• irritates sensory receptors of nasal & trachealmucosa

• stimulates respiratory & vasomotor centers in medulla, increasing respiratory rate & BP

INDICATION:

• simple fainting spell

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

• chronic asthma or COPD (may cause HTN)

DOSAGE/ROUTE:

• break ampule in gauze and pass under nostrils a few times to see if patient regains consciousness

ADVERSE EFFECTS:

• Bronchospasm

• HTN

PRECAUTION:

• For any syncopal episode, think of life threatening medical problems first and treat for them instead of using this drug

• Avoid prolonged inhalation
