ETOMIDATE (AMIDATE)

CLASS:

  • Hypnotic Anesthetic

ACTIONS:

  • Non-barbiturate hypnotic that acts on GABA and depress activity of the RAS of the CNS with minimal cardiovascular and respiratory depressant effect

INDICATIONS:

  • induction and maintenance of anesthesia to accommodate intubation

CONTRAINDICATION:

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Controversial use in septic shock

STANDARD PREP:

  • 2 mg/ml

DOSE/ROUTE:

  • 0.3 mg/kg IV

PEDS DOSE:

  • See Hawaii S.O. & PALS Algorithm

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Hypertension or hypotension

  • Arrhythmias

  • Apnea or laryngospams

  • N/V

  • Myoclonic muscle movement

PRECAUTIONS:

  • May cause cardiac depression in elderly

  • Long term use can lead to adrenal suppression
