MIDAZOLAM HYDROCHLORIDE (VERSED)

CLASSES:

  • Short-acting benzodiazepine (Controlled Substance Schedule IV)

  • Sedative hypnotic

ACTIONS:

  • A benzodiazepine that enhances the action of gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA), one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain.

  • Produces anxiolytic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant and amnestic effects

INDICATIONS:

  • Premedication for tracheal intubation

  • Seizures

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Shock

  • Coma

  • Alcohol intoxication

  • Glaucoma

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Concomitant use of barbituates, alcohol, narcotics, or other CNS depressants

STANDARD PREP:

  • 10 mg / 2 cc vial

DOSAGE/ROUTE:

  • 0.06 mg / kg IV, may repeat same dose in increments to a max dose of 0.2 mg / kg

PEDIATRIC DOSE: See PALS Guidelines

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Hypotension

  • Respiratory depression / arrest

  • Laryngospasm, bronchospasm

  • Headache

  • Blurred vision, nystagmus

  • Nausea & Vomiting

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Provide continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function

  • Have resuscitative equipment and antagonist readily at hand.
