MIDAZOLAM HYDROCHLORIDE (VERSED)
CLASSES:
Short-acting benzodiazepine (Controlled Substance Schedule IV)
Sedative hypnotic
ACTIONS:
A benzodiazepine that enhances the action of gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA), one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain.
Produces anxiolytic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant and amnestic effects
INDICATIONS:
Premedication for tracheal intubation
Seizures
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Shock
Coma
Alcohol intoxication
Glaucoma
Hypersensitivity
Concomitant use of barbituates, alcohol, narcotics, or other CNS depressants
STANDARD PREP:
10 mg / 2 cc vial
DOSAGE/ROUTE:
0.06 mg / kg IV, may repeat same dose in increments to a max dose of 0.2 mg / kg

SIDE EFFECTS:
Hypotension
Respiratory depression / arrest
Laryngospasm, bronchospasm
Headache
Blurred vision, nystagmus
Nausea & Vomiting
PRECAUTIONS:
Provide continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function
Have resuscitative equipment and antagonist readily at hand.
