FENTANYL CITRATE (SUBLIMAZE)
CLASS:
Narcotic (Opioid) Analgesic (Schedule II)
ACTION:
CNS Depressant, Binds to opiate receptors producing analgesia and euphoria
Reduces the brainstem respiratory centers responsiveness to CO2, also depresses pontine and medullary centers involved in regulating respiratory rhythmicity thus produces respiratory depression.
INDICATION:
pain control
maintenance of analgesia and adjunct to RSI
CONTRAINDICATION:
Hypersensitivity
Respiratory Depression
Myasthenia gravis
STANDARD PREP:
50 mcg/ml
(80-100 times as potent as Morphine Sulfate)
DOSAGE/ROUTE:
50 – 100 mcg/dose (0.05 – 0.1 mg) IM or IV/IO
(slow 1-2 min) max. dose 150 mcg (0.15 mg)
Onset: Immediate — Peak: 3-5 min (IV) — Duration: 30-60 min
PEDS DOSE:
1 – 2 mcg/kg IM or IV/IO (slow 1-2 min) [Need to contact BSP]
SIDE EFFECTS:
Respiratory depression
Hypotension
Dysrhythmias
Palpitations
CNS depression or euphoria
Dizziness
N/V
PRECAUTION:
Use with caution in patients with traumatic brain injury
Serious respiratory depression can be reversed with naloxone (Narcan) if necessary.
